C.O.W. Bus offers hours of literacy learning for youngsters

A very special ‘school bus’ is rolling into Airdrie May 30.
The Prairie Classroom on Wheels – or C.O.W. Bus – is an initiative of the Centre for Family Literacy that supports and encourages early learning for families and children aged birth to five.
The bus, which is painted like a Holstein cow, will be parked at Airdrie Public Library (APL) from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., offering free activities for families to build reading and writing skills. Several complementary activities will also be offered inside the library throughout the day.
The C.O.W. Bus – which is funded by Alberta Advanced Education and Technology and the United Way – first hit the road in 2003 to raise awareness and bring family literacy resources to communities around the province. Families are always excited to see the arrival of the unique vehicle, which is pretty hard to miss.
Once settled, C.O.W. Bus facilitators are more than happy to welcome visitors and share their experience and expertise on literacy development. It’s a great way to celebrate the advent of summer, so families are invited to APL for a day of fun and learning.
Another special resource for preschoolers, young elementary children and their families is TumbleBook Library, an online collection of animated, talking picture books. This new e-resource, courtesy of Marigold Library System, offers such popular authors as Robert Munsch and Doreen Cronin. Storybooks, videos, puzzles and games – children are sure to enjoy the selection in a digital format.

Also for families, this Saturday is L’heure du Conte (May theme: Cirque et Parachute), part of our regular Free Family Fun Saturdays program. This French immersion storytime featuring books, rhymes and crafts is designed for children in K-2 French immersion, but all are welcome. The hour-long program begins at 1:30 p.m. and no registration is necessary.
