To help celebrate 100 years of 4-H clubs in Canada The Chrysler Foundation has teamed up with 4-H Canada to sponsor 100 scholarships for 4-H members across the country.
Kari Becker, leader of the Balzac 4-H Beef Club said the news of the scholarships is great and she will be encouraging eligible members in her group to apply for the scholarship, which is $1,000 each.
“It enables members to go on to secondary education and take everything they’ve learned through 4-H and out into the world,” Becker said.
She said scholarships like the on sponsored by Chrysler Foundation give 4-H members an extra incentive and motivation to stay involved in the club.
“Being part of 4-H just gives kids a little bit extra,” she said of the opportunities the club provides.
“This educational initiative supports the cornerstone of what 4-H is about,” said Shannon Benner, CEO of 4-H Canada.
4-H members who are at least 16 years old, are a current member in good standing, are in their final year of high school and have applied to a post-secondary institution in the field of arts, science, or business of agriculture, or who are currently enrolled in a post-secondary institute in the fields listed earlier, are eligible to apply for the scholarship.
Applicants must complete a 500-word essay outlining “What does being a farmer mean to you?” along with a letter of reference from a 4-H leader.
“In its 100-year history, this is the largest, one-year scholarship program that 4-H has rolled out,” said President and CEO of Chrysler Canada Reid Bigland in a release.
“It goes without saying that The Chrysler Foundation and Ram Trucks are quite humbled to be able to provide this many Canadian youth with the opportunity to further their education and expand their knowledge in support of our vital agricultural industry.”
“We are very fortunate that The Chrysler Foundation understands the importance of developing responsible and motivated young leaders in Canada. This investment truly embodies the spirit of 4-H leadership as it will have community impact from coast to coast,” Benner said.
The application deadline is Jan. 15, and scholarship winners will be announced in March.
