Telus, a national telecommunications company in Canada, is set to invest $4.5 million in infrastructure and facilities in Airdrie this year.
Telus is investing $700 million throughout the province of Alberta in 2013 as part of efforts to upgrade internet connection speeds by installing fiber optic cables.
The initiative also includes investments into community services and local health care, as part of a program called We Give Where We Live. Telus Media Relations representative Liz Sauvé said it was important to the company to be good corporate citizens.
“It’s something we’ve implemented across Canada,” Sauvé said. “We want to give back to our communities all year long.”
In Airdrie, Telus has contributed $350,000 to charitable and community organizations since 2000.
This money has gone on to support the Airdrie Regional Recreation Enhancement Society, the Boys and Girls Club of Airdrie and the Airdrie and District Humane Society.
Last year, Telus provided matching grants to Airdrie businesses, reaching a total of about $5,000. One benefitting business was Airdrie Meals on Wheels, and treasurer Don Pike said the non-profit received $360.
“It helped. We need pretty well all the donations we can get,” Pike said.
Finalized information for where the money this year is donated will not be available until next year. Charitable partners apply for funding through the Telus website.
Since 2009, Telus has also run the TV for Good advertisement campaigns, which has since raised $270,000. One-hundred and 21 thousand dollars of that money went to Genesis Place to support the ongoing expansion project.
Sauvé said that equally as important as monetary investments in the community was a dedication to volunteerism.
“It’s an organized effort to show how easy it can be to give back to our local communities,” she said.
“We just want to get down and dirty for a few hours and we’re hoping that shows to the public that volunteering doesn’t need to be difficult.”
Last month, more than 13,000 Telus employees and family volunteered during the Telus Day of Giving, a Canada-wide initiative supporting local charities and community organizations. In Airdrie, 15 employees volunteered at the local Boys and Girls Club. For more information on the We Give Where We Live initiative, visit givewherewelive.ca
