MMA is no more dangerous than boxing
Re: “Mixed Martial Arts dilemma: Should the sport be banned in Canada?” Aug. 24
Dear editor,
I was glad to read your article about the controversy about MMA. I think more people need to become educated about this fast-growing sport. We all know that it’s dangerous, so do the people that get in the cage. Calgary Combative Sports Commission has strict rules that help to ensure the safety of the fighters.
They all have to undergo physicals and blood work before they fight. A doctor is always in attendance at the fights and meets with each fighter before, and multiple times after they compete.
The referees that are involved have excellent training and their utmost concern is to do their best to ensure everyone can come back another day.
Boxing is less controversial but of all the fights I’ve attended, the worst injury I’ve seen came from a boxing match, not MMA.
Thanks for getting the discussion going.
Beth Gabriel,
Airdrie
