May the best candidate win

Jan 11, 2012 05:53 pm

We’re just days into the PC party’s local nomination process, and already two political heavyweights have joined the race.

Without a doubt, the candidacy of Linda Bruce is causing the greatest stir. The former mayor has deep roots in the city, having served on council for many years, and spent countless hours volunteering for local organizations and causes. The mother of three also volunteered with defeated PC leadership candidate Gary Mar’s campaign last year, helping her gain a more provincial perspective.

Kelly Hegg, meanwhile, has a shorter political resume, but has proved to be one of the city’s most popular aldermen. He isn’t afraid to ask the tough questions at council meetings. He also doesn’t talk to hear the sound of his own voice. This makes him likeable, but may hurt his bid to become an MLA. Politicians who refuse to posture can, at times, slip under the radar.

For politics watchers in Airdrie, this will be an interesting race. As this is the first such contest for the Airdrie-only constituency, it will showcase the dynamics and issues of importance to local people. As Bruce and Hegg remain friendly with each other, we expect no negativity between the candidates. Of course, more candidates could yet step forward, adding further intrigue to this race.

As for which candidate will give MLA Rob Anderson a tougher challenge in the spring, we leave that to the local PC party faithful to decide.

Our hope is this: that the party members choose the candidate best able to communicate a progressive message. This will allow Airdrie voters to take part in a true debate of ideas in the general election.

Too often, in the past, elections in our riding have proved a formality. This time can be different. With the right opponents, we can have something better.

We can have a real race.
