Local oilman runs for PC nomination
Michael Crawford is tired of standing on the sidelines.
Crawford is seeking the Progressive Conservative nomination in the Airdrie riding.
“I think it is time the needs of Airdrie residents are met in the Legislature and I am going to do something about that,” said the 36-year-old.
“It’s about building relationships and the ability to lead and get results.”
Crawford said his degree in political economy and experience as a director of corporate development in the oil and gas sector have given him the tools to develop relationships, communicate effectively and achieve the desired results.
“I don’t have experience as a politician but I’m about collaboration and leading,” he said.
“Alberta has the opportunity, the money and the entrepreneurial spirit to be a proactive leader. It’s all about motivation and follow through.”
He said some of the major issues in Airdrie are a lack of a 24-hour health-care facility, few businesses in the city and the need for schools.
“These are good-news problems,” he said.
“It means people like Airdrie and want to move here but we need to attract doctors to the area. It hasn’t helped that we haven’t been represented (by a government MLA) for the last two years.”
Crawford said, if elected, he would be focused on the future.
“We have a great life in Alberta and yet we are frustrated and concerned,” he said.
“I feel the government tends to be focused on the past and present and not focused on the spot we want to be. We should be asking, ‘are we going to leave this place better than when we got here? Are we going to be giving our children and grandchildren the same and better opportunities than what we had?’”
Crawford has two daughters ages six and seven and describes himself as a family man.
“I think I’m pretty relatable,” he said.
“I’m a mid-30s dad with kids in school who volunteers in the community and sees the challenges the city is having. I am asking for the residents’ support and trust and I hope they have their voices heard on Jan. 28.”
The Airdrie Progressive Conservative Constituency Association stopped accepting nominations on Jan. 18 at 4 p.m.
The PC nominee will be chosen on Jan. 28.
The date of the general election has not been announced but Premier Alison Redford has said it will be between March 1 and May 31.
“I see exciting change under the leadership of Premier Redford and want to be an active leader in support of this mandate,” said Crawford.
