Student raises more than $700 for sick brother

Jen Ruklic is one proud mother.

She has been fundraising for the Southern Alberta Region Hemophilia Society for years and she never thought she would be outdone by her eight-year-old daughter.

Ruklic became involved with the Hemophilia Society because her three-year-old son has the rare blood disease. She has raised thousands of dollars through bottle drives, events and, most recently, a coin campaign, in November.

“We raised $500 in 15 stores in Airdrie and Cassie came to me and said she could do better,” said Ruklic.

“She wanted to do a fundraiser at her school and that was it, she was hooked. I was so touched and moved that she wanted to do this. She wanted to know what she could do to make a difference. I think she caught the fundraising bug from her dad and I.”

In just one week, Cassie raised $725 with her Coins for Carter’s Quest for the Cure initiative at Good Shepherd School.

“I wanted to do the fundraiser so my brother could get a cure for hemophilia,” said the Grade 3 student.

“I raised even more than I thought I could.”

Cassie’s principal Don Lauzon helped with the project.

“A number of students bring up individual charities that are close to them and we encourage them to do all the work themselves as a leadership opportunity,” said Lauzon.

“She made the posters, wrote the scripts and made the announcements and delivered the coin containers to each classroom.”

He said the initiative was a chance for students to see that they can help other kids.

“More than $700 is awesome,” he added. “I would say it was a resounding success and a great way to motivate kids.”

Ruklic said she was overwhelmed by the school’s support.

“It was just phenomenal how they rallied around Cassie and helped her with this.”

She said she will be eliciting Cassie’s help with the April 14 Mall in the Hall event where vendors will sell their wares at the Airdrie Legion.

“It is a great way to get involved with the community,” she said.

“You get to meet people in your neighbourhood and pick up something great for yourself or someone else.”

April 14 will also kick of the Bids For Bruisers campaign. An online auction that will raise money for hemophilia research. For more information, visit www.cartersquest.weebly.com
