Wizard's Wardrobe to raise funds for Heart and Stroke research
A local business is using its staff’s creativity to raise money for the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.
Staff at the Wizard’s Wardrobe has created five ‘Queen of Hearts for the Heart’ costumes that will be auctioned off online to raise money for the Foundation during the month of February.
“I made a costume for the Queen of Hearts for an eight-year-old girl for Halloween and around the same time, I kept seeing more and more commercials on TV for the Heart and Stroke Foundation and I just kind of put the two together,” said Ruthanna Friesen, owner of Wizard’s Wardrobe and creator of the fundraiser.
“Both sides of my family are affected by heart conditions. The Heart and Stroke Foundation does a great job of educating people about what it takes to take care of their hearts.”
The staff created the unique dresses from rental costume pieces and sewing supplies in stock at the store.
“I thought it was a good idea because it tests my staff and lets them have free reign with a project,” he said.
“It’s just been fantastic what they came up with and they had such a blast doing it. It is also upcycling because we are not going out and buying new materials for the costumes.”
The Wizard’s Wardrobe has been open in its current location in Airdrie since December and Friesen said the community has embraced the store with open arms.
The costumes range from children’s size eight to adults size 3X. There is even one for a small dog.
“This is a real demonstration of what we can do here,” she said.
The retail prices for the costumes are set between $50 and $250, but Friesen said people are willing to pay top price for costumes of this quality. She said her goal is to raise $2,000.
“It’s for a good cause and these costumes are one-of-a-kind,” she said.
“They’ve got a lot of detail in them and they are fantastic. There is a wide audience for Queen of Hearts costumes. We always have people asking for them. People will appreciate their value. We hope people will bid generously, knowing what the money is going towards.”
The costumes can be viewed at the Wizard’s Wardrobe store and will be auctioned off at facebook.com/wizardswardrobe
