Spring election will be interesting

Feb 01, 2012 05:23 pm

We would like to congratulate Alderman Kelly Hegg for winning the Progressive Conservative nomination in the Airdrie constituency.

He proved he can hold his own at the candidates’ debate held at the Woodside Seniors Club on Jan. 26.

We respect Hegg for the work he does on council and for throwing his hat in the provincial politics ring.

Former mayor Linda Bruce and engineer firm director Michael Crawford also put their names forward and we appreciate their efforts.

Stepping up to a contest like this is not easy to do and we applaud them.

With current MLA Rob Anderson, who crossed the floor from PC to Wildrose in 2010, and NDP candidate Brian Young, 22; this spring’s provincial election will be one of the most interesting Alberta has seen in a long time.

Candidates will no doubt discuss health care, education, the logistics of MLAs crossing the floor and many other topics during the build-up to the election.

Will the race come down to the question of who has done more for Airdrie during their time in office: Anderson or Hegg?

Will it focus on the fact that the current MLA “jumped ship” without a byelection?

Are residents tired of the back and forth between PCs and the Wildrose and looking for another choice?

What will ultimately determine what party and which individual will represent the new riding of Airdrie?

Only the residents can decide and we hope to see many of them come out to the polls and vote. Alberta is notorious for low voter turnout but with a race that is this interesting, residents should be lined up come election day.
