Sport Shorts: Mustangs claim title in Olds

The George McDougall senior girls basketball team won gold at a tournament in Olds last weekend.

The Mustangs defeated F.P. Walshe from Fort Macleod 66-63 in the final, Jan. 28.

Tori Zabel and Kylie Lebedeff led the scoring with 16 points each, while Amanda Kerr had 12 points and Mady Kerr had 10 points.

They opened the tournament by beating Canmore 78-27 and defeated the host Olds Spartans 77-45 in the semifinal. Lebedeff led the scoring over Olds with 22 points, with Tory Barber adding 16 points, Stephanie Beerda had 12 rebounds and 10 blocked shots.

George McDougall will host its annual Hoop Classic basketball tournament this weekend at the school’s Mustang Corral gymnasium.

Teams from Chestermere, Olds, Camrose, Calgary, Canmore and Strathmore will challenge the Mustangs.

George McDougall opens the tournament at noon on Feb. 3 against Canmore. The Mustangs will play its second game at 7 p.m. that evening against L.B. Pearson from Calgary.

The final will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 4.

Curling divisionals

The Airdrie Curling Club will host the Rocky View Sports Association’s curling divisional championships Feb. 8-9.

Boys and girls teams from across RVSA will compete in the two-day bonspiel.
