The City of Airdrie will receive about $8.2 million in Municipal Sustainability Initiative (MSI) funding for 2012.
The Government of Alberta announced its MSI funding allocation, Feb. 16.
“I’m pleased to see communities across the province use MSI funding to build up their roads, recreation facilities and generally improve and rejuvenate their facilities and infrastructure,” said Doug Griffiths, minister of Municipal Affairs.
“Quality of life is critical to those who drive our economic success. These kinds of investments make our neighbourhoods more vibrant and even better places to live and raise families.”
The City of Airdrie will receive $7.6 million in capital funding and $577,782 in operating funds.
“The overall MSI money is only slightly more than we received in 2011 so the projects we used for capital planning are good for 2012,” said Mayor Peter Brown.
“Our capital budget won’t be affected.”
All municipalities in Alberta are eligible for MSI funding. Over the past five years, the MSI has provided $3.1 billion in long-term funding to municipalities.
Brown said the City will use about $6 million for Genesis Place phase three, roughly $1 million will be used for roof renovations of the Parks building on East Lake Hill and $300,000 will be used for the completion of the RCMP facility at 2 Highland Park Way.
“The rest of the funds will be used for numerous projects in the community,” he said.
The amount of MSI funding is determined by municipal populations, education property tax requisitions and kilometres of local roads, and include base funding for all municipalities and Sustainable Investment funding for municipalities with limited local tax bases.
Rocky View County will receive about $12 million, Crossfield will get about $698,000, Cochrane will receive about $3.6 million, and Chestermere will get about $2.6 million.
The Province gave out $896 million in 2012-13, up $10 million from last year.
