Local MP's rioting bill gets second reading

Feb 22, 2012 06:03 pm | Trevor Bacque

Local MP Blake Richards’ bill to make wearing masks illegal for rioters is receiving serious attention.

He introduced the Preventing Persons from Concealing Their Identity during Riots and Unlawful Assemblies Act, Bill C-309, Oct. 3 and it recently received second reading in the House of Commons.

He is confident the bill will become law.

“This is legislation that police chiefs in our major cities have said is needed to control and de-escalate riots before they can cause the kind of widespread injury to persons and destruction of property that we’ve seen happen twice in the span of one year, first in Toronto in June 2010 and again in Vancouver in 2011,” he said.

Sections 65 and 66 would be amended under the Criminal Code, if approved.
