Airdrie family found dead in rural Saskatchewan

An Airdrie couple and their two-year-old son were found dead in the ditch alongside a Saskatchewan rural road, May 28.

A passing motorist made the grisly discovery around 1:30 p.m. near St. Walburg, located about 100 km northeast of Lloydminster, according to Saskatchewan RCMP.

A 26-year-old man, 23-year-old woman and their toddler son were pronounced dead on the scene. Police discovered a small caliber .22 rifle nearby.

Major crimes investigators, crime scene analysts and K9 members were called in.

Autopsies are being done on May 30 to help determine the cause of the deaths.

Police aren’t confirming the incident is a murder-suicide, but said it doesn’t appear anyone else was involved in the deaths.

“There is no indication of any other individual being involved in the death of these individuals,” said RCMP Sgt. Paul Dawson.

Police say the adults were married and had family ties in Saskatchewan.

Dawson said it is too early to know how long the bodies had been in the ditch before being discovered.

Next of kin has been notified, but the names of the dead have not been released.
