Waste Management Strategy numbers seem incorrect
Re “Council passes Waste Management Strategy,” June 8
Dear Editor,
I am wondering where Ms. Muretti came up with the estimate that 50 per cent to 60 per cent of household waste is organic?
I surely hope that it was not extrapolated from Calgary studies since Calgary does not have the same recycle rates as Airdrie since they have no limit on the number of bags/week.
In my estimation, you would have to put out all you grass clippings and tree branches to hit this threshold or be throwing out a lot of waste food. We have a good recycling system now and an easily accessible waste transfer site as well.
Rather than increase taxes by $6/month/household. (Yes, a fee is just another tax, and have you ever seen a tax go down?)
I would much rather see the bag limit reduced to one per week.
John McKishnie, Airdrie
