RCMP investigate death of Airdrie baby

Airdrie RCMP is investigating the death of a 10-month-old boy.

Around 2:15 p.m. on June 27, RCMP was called to an Airdrie residence, when the boy’s mother found him unresponsive after a nap.

The child was taken to Alberta Children’s Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

An autopsy has been completed, but the medical officer’s report was incomplete as of press time, according to Airdrie RCMP spokesperson Sgt. Patricia Neely.

According to police, the family has been cooperating with the investigation and is distraught over the death.

Fatal collision

A 42-year-old Crossfield man died in a single-vehicle collision, July 2.

At around 10 p.m., the Airdrie Rural RCMP responded to the collision, which involved two occupants, on Township Road 285 near Crossfield.

According to a police report, the driver, who died, was travelling eastbound when he rolled the 2004 GMC Sierra Truck. He was ejected from the truck and pronounced dead on the scene.

A 25-year-old Crossfield man, who was a passenger, was taken to hospital where he was listed in stable condition.

Police believe the passenger was wearing a seatbelt, while the driver was not.

The name of the deceased man was not released as of press time. The cause of the collision remains under investigation.

Perfume theft

More than $700 of perfume was stolen from an Airdrie drug store, June 29.

At around 2:30 p.m., police responded to the theft of multiple bottles of perfume. Witnesses told police two men entered the store and opened the locked perfume cabinets. When a store employee approached the men to see if they needed assistance, they ran away.

The employee then noticed that multiple bottles of perfume were missing from the cabinets.

The first man is described as being Caucasian in his early 20s, about six feet tall, 150 pounds, with short brown hair. The second man is described as being Caucasian in his early 20s, about six feet tall with buzz-cut and short, brown hair. He placed the perfume in an orange and brown striped backpack.

Long weekend stats

Airdrie RCMP Integrated Traffic Unit (AITU) members issued 112 violation tickets and responded to 30 calls for service along the Highway 2 corridor between Calgary and Didsbury, over the long weekend

Officers handed out 66 speeding tickets, including three at more than 50 kilometres per hour over the speed limit, 17 seatbelt violations and two distracted driving cell phone tickets. Last year over the July long weekend, AITU gave out 171 tickets.

The 911 calls for service on Highway 2 attended this past weekend included one property damage collision, four complaints of suspicious people and 25 various driving complaints.

An inspection of more than 40 child car seats on Highway 566 in Balzac on June 30 between 2 and 4 p.m. resulted in 10 tickets for major infractions, such as forward-facing child seats without tether straps installed, infants not properly secured into the harness, and child seats not properly secured with the vehicle seatbelt or UAS anchors.

An officer stopped a motorist travelling south on Highway 2 at 173-kilometres-per-hour on July 2 at 9:30 a.m.

At around 2:30 p.m. that same day, a member of the AITU stopped a blue Nissan Versa travelling at 156 kilometres per hour in a 100-kilometre-per-hour zone on Highway 72 west of Beiseker. The driver, a 25-year old man from Blackfalds, showed signs of being impaired by alcohol and was assessed roadside. Officers determined the driver had a blood alcohol content between 0.05 and 0.08 milligrams of alcohol. The driver was issued a speeding ticket and a 24-hour driver’s licence suspension.

At about 7:30 p.m. on July 2, a silver Mazda 626 was clocked at 116-kilometres-per hour in a 60-kilometre per hour zone on Veterans Blvd. near 24 St. in Airdrie. When a member of the AITU stopped the car, it was found to be unregistered. The 24-year-old man from Edmonton is scheduled to appear in Airdrie Provincial Court, Sept. 4.
