Young photographer supports local charity
Most six year olds spend their summer biking, playing with friends and watching TV. Airdrie’s Cydney Bradbury is spending hers looking through the lens of a camera.
The precocious young girl, who will be attending Grade 1 at Ecole Edwards Elementary this fall, started taking pictures when she was five.
Bradbury’s artistic journey started when she used her mom’s digital SLR camera to shoot some photos. Soon the brown-eyed shutterbug was hooked.
“I love it,” she said, crouching down to take a picture of a hollyhock blossom in an eastside garden, July 25. “I get some pretty pictures.”
Bradbury shared her most memorable photographic experience.
While at the zoo, Bradbury aimed her lens at a peacock. As she clicked the shutter, the brazen bird jumped up onto Bradbury’s chest.
The result is an extreme close-up of the bird, the greens and blues seemingly as vibrant as they look in person.
Rather than just putting the photo on the wall, Bradbury combined the image with her other passion: Airdrie’s Food Bank.
“I love the food bank because it helps the children,” said Bradbury.
Bradbury partnered with a student at a local art school who transformed several of the young photographer’s images, including the peacock, onto art tiles and coasters.
The resulting art tiles and coasters are available for purchase, with a portion of the funds going to the food bank. Bradbury is also looking at investing a portion of the proceeds to purchasing her own camera. Bradbury’s involvement with the charitable organization doesn’t stop there. In fact, she celebrated her sixth birthday on July 12 a little differently than many young children do by collecting about six bags of groceries for the food bank. Bradbury’s mom Kim Sundset is proud of her daughter.
“I am trying to teach her to share and give,” she said.
Her daughter learned about the food bank by being involved in Airdrie’s Community Gardens, which reserves plots to grow vegetables for the charity organization, Sundset added.
Liane Pinel, the owner of Airdrie’s Creating Keepsakes Ltd., an business that supports a number of charitable organizations, helps Bradbury create her coasters and tile art.
“This little girl is amazing,” Pinel said. “She is an old soul that just knows people need to get out in the community and do what they can and I back her with everything I have got.”
