Twirlers place at 2012 Worlds in Paris, France

Sara Black and Taelyr Patton represented Airdrie and Canada at the 2012 World Baton Twirling Championships in Paris, France, Aug. 2 to 5. Black placed 17th in the short program preliminary round and 15th in her preliminary solo, which advanced her to the semi-final.

However, her 12th place finish in the semis wasn’t enough to advance her to the finals.

Patton was part of Team Canada, which finished sixth in the team preliminary round and fifth in the team final.

Airdrie Aces

The Airdrie Aces Athletics Club recently closed out the 2012 outdoor track and field season at the Sherwood Park Track Classic provincials, in Sherwood Park, July 14 to 15.

In the peewee girls category, Jasmine Szucs brought home four bronze medals in the 80-metre dash, high jump, shot put and discus. Sam Rajah took silver in high jump and bronze in the 600-metre run. Grace Gwozd won silver in the bantam girls’ hammer throw event.

Logan Nellis brought home five medals in the peewee boys’ competition. He won gold in shot put, silver in the 80-metre dash, 150-metre dash and high jump events and bronze in long jump. Scott Chalupiak took gold in the bantam boys’ 800-metre run, while Adam Sleik picked up two silver medals in high jump and discus.

Airdrie Minor Basketball

The Stars basketball program will be holding two summer camps in Airdrie, Aug. 13 to 17. The kindergarten to Grade 3 camp runs from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and the grades 4 to 6 camp runs from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Both camps will be held at Genesis Place and cost $179 plus GST. The deadline for registration for the 2012-2013 Airdrie Minor Basketball season is fast approaching. The last day for registration for the Mini Competitive (U11), Bantam (U13) and Junior (U20) age groups is Aug. 20. The deadline for Tyke (U8) and Mini (U11) registration is Sept. 10.
