Annual Terry Fox Run set to go
Organizers are busy preparing for Airdrie’s 27th annual Terry Fox Run for cancer research at Nose Creek Park, Sept. 16.
The family event will feature a free barbecue and entertainment by local band Storm, along with the 2.5-kilometre run or walk.
Volunteer Diane Bullis, who recently moved to Airdrie but has been involved with the Terry Fox Run for a decade, encourages residents to get involved by participating in the walk or volunteering.
“I think that people should be involved because there is not a family that doesn’t have someone touched by this disease,” she said.
“We have made wonderful progress. The type of cancer that Terry (Fox) died from, people don’t die from that anymore, that is how far we have come in 32 years. We all can do our little bit.”
Bullis said last year the local run attracted 150 people, adding organizers are hoping for at least 200 at this year’s event.
The run also needs volunteers to help set up, clean up, serve food and direct runners and walkers during the event, according to Bullis.
It has been 30 years since a young visionary on a mission to help bring an end to the misery caused by cancer was relentlessly pounding the pavement through province after province on his now legendary Marathon of Hope.
In 1980, Fox’s goal was to receive one dollar from every Canadian. He said, “if you have given one dollar, you are part of the Marathon of Hope.”
Bullis said the food for this year’s barbecue, along with snacks and beverages, have all been donated by local businesses.
Registration starts at 10 a.m. for the event, and there is no registration fee and no minimums for participants.
Bullis said the event welcomes everyone, including families with strollers, runners and walkers.
The race starts at 11 a.m., with lunch and entertainment beginning at noon.
