Residents invited to take part in Gold Rush

Sep 20, 2012 02:03 pm | Dawn Smith

Airdronians are invited to take part in the Boys and Girls Club of Airdrie’s (BGC) latest fundraiser.

Gold Rush, a 50/50 draw, will be done live on Air 106.1 on the last Friday of every month at 8:50 a.m. The winner will take home a minimum of $400.

The money will go directly to supporting programs and services for both children and youth at the Allen Street and Ron Ebbesen Arena BGC locations.

“At the end of the day, all funds raised go directly into supporting our kids,” said Denisa Sanness, the BGC’s executive director.

“It’s important to get behind the BGC because, ultimately, it is about supporting the youth and keeping costs affordable for families.”

A maximum of $1,000 tickets will be printed for the inaugural draw, making the total possible prize for participants $1,000.

Tickets are $2 and are available at The Centre, the BGC’s Ron Ebbesen location;s the Hair Lounge and the Ramada Hotel. Sanness said the club is looking for local businesses to take part in the fundraiser by selling the tickets at their locations.

According to Sanness, the idea for the fundraiser came from a meeting she had on Canada’s east coast with other Boys and Girls clubs. Sanness said out east, the fundraiser is well established.

The BGC offers year-long interest-based programming, such as cooking, drama, guitar lessons, DJ classes and sports for Airdrie youth ages six to 18. Programming is available after school daily and on the weekends. The club also operates affordable camps all summer.

Last year, the BGC had 1,000 children and youth take part in its programming.
