United Way wing eating contest to benefit charities
ATB Financial Airdrie will be holding its annual United Way fundraiser with a silent auction and a wing-eating contest at the Airdrie Legion, Oct. 10.
In years past, the fundraiser has brought in between $15,000 and $18,000 per year.
“We have always been, and will continue to be a very community-minded business. It’s a feel good to be able to know you are making a difference,” said ATB Airdrie Manager Bob Storgard. “When funds remain in Airdrie and benefit two very worthwhile charities, to do so much good for so many, that in itself is a reward.”
The organizations that will benefit from this year’s event are North Rocky View Community Links and the Boys and Girls Club of Airdrie.
For a minimum $50 donation, anyone can enter the wing-eating competition. Competitors will be entered into a heat, and the winners of all the heats will face off to find a grand champion.
In the case of a tie during the finale, the two competitors with the most number of wings finished will have a “cluck-off.”
“In the event of tie, we have a backup plan,” said Storgard. “Whoever sounds like the best chicken to the audience at the end of the day wins.”
Storgard said one of his favourite memories is when a former bank teller beat a returning champion in the wing-eating contest.
“About three years ago, one of our tellers beat the returning champ from year after year,” said Storgard. “It’s amazing someone of her size and statue could be the champ.”
The event will be held at the Airdrie Legion on Oct. 10 from 6 to 10 p.m. Anyone interested in entering the contest should call the ATB Airdrie Branch to register at 403-948-5989.
