Local businessman honoured with national award
A local businessman was presented with a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal for his years of community service, Oct. 9.
Prime Minister Stephen Harper, Lieutenant Governor Donald S. Ethell and MP Blake Richards presented Al Jones, the owner of Airdrie’s Here’s the Scoop and ADvance Distribution, with the medal in Calgary during a formal ceremony at the Red and White Club.
He was one of 180 area residents, including a number of Airdronians, to receive the award.
“It was great, not only to be a recipient but to be in the presence of so many other people that give back to their community, to their country and give selflessly,” said Jones.
“I was very honoured; it was very humbling.”
Jones, a father of two, has lived in Airdrie for 18 years and has had a hand in a number of community projects and events.
He has experience on the City’s Environmental Advisory Board and the Airdrie and District Community Foundation Board. Jones is also a director of the Airdrie Regional Airshow and is chair of the 2014 Summer Games Committee.
“I wear a lot of hats,” said Jones, adding he is a past member of the Airdrie Chamber of Commerce board of directors and has moderated a number of political events in the city and other Southern Alberta communities.
Despite his involvement, Jones is humble.
“Nobody does anything on their own,” he said. “My successes in all those roles are because of a lot of support from friends and like-minded people that believe in giving back to the community.”
As for his motivation for donating his time and money to local causes, Jones said he was raised to believe that whatever you give out to the world, you get back tenfold.
“You don’t do this sort of thing for the at-a-boys, you do it to help the community,” said Jones.
“As I have raised my children… they have definitely benefited from the hard work of others, and it is important to give that support back.”
