Chargers shut out Bobcats

Oct 18, 2012 01:43 pm | Briana Shymanski

The Bert Church Chargers continued to roll through the season and remained undefeated as it defeated the Bow Valley Bobcats in Rocky View Sports Association (RVSA) volleyball league play, Oct. 10.

Bert Church extended its winning streak to three games, making them one of two unbeaten teams in the RVSA league.

“It’s been good,” said Chargers Head Coach Carol Smith. “I think the boys are pretty happy about it. I don’t think they look at the wins, but they’re happy when they play well.”

A sloppy second set nearly sparked a comeback for the Bobcats and after the team gave up seven straight points, allowing Bow Valley to tie the game, Smith called a timeout in order to refocus the team. It set them back on track and the players pushed through a re-energized opponent, cruising to the three-set victory.

Smith said captain Mark Taylor has been instrumental in situations like what Bert Church has faced against Bow Valley all season long. The third-year senior played three different positions against the Bobcats due to the team missing one of it’s setters.

“He’s so versatile,” Smith said. “We throw him in and he does what he’s supposed to do.”

The Bobcats dropped the first set 25-11, but rallied back and nearly took the second set, coming only six points shorts. Bobcats Head Coach Eric Richard said a slow start to the match hindered the Bobcats through the last two sets.

“(Bert Church) is a good, experienced team,” Richard said. “(In the second set), we had a few guys step up. One person took leadership in the back row and helped the communication.”
