Roller Derby Association hosts fundraising event
The Rocky View Roller Derby Association’s Honour Rollers put their spelling skills to the test Nov. 10. It’s members came together to host the organization’s first fundraising event at Killarney’s Irish Pub.
The Dorky Derby Spelling Bee brought together team members and their supporters for an old-fashioned spelling bee, as well as food, drinks, silent auction and raffle, all of which was held to help raise money for the growing league.
“The proceeds from the event are going to go toward the purchase of new uniforms,” said Stacey Lutes, Honour Roller’s vice president.
“We are also going to take a portion of the money raised and put it back into the league, in particular the development of our second team The Real Hellwives of Rocky View County.”
The league, which meets every Monday, Thursday and Saturday at Genesis Place, is always on the lookout for new members and is also hoping to find sponsorship among Airdrie’s business community.
“We are still a relatively new league, but the amount of interest we have gotten over the last few months has been great,” said Lutes. “We want to expand the league and we also want to find sponsorship. This sport is all about empowering women and teaching them to have self-confidence. It’s also about bringing women together, which is one of the best things about this.”
The club accepts women from the ages of 18 to 50 of all skill levels.
According to Lutes, a desire to play hard and get a few bumps along the way is definitely a requirement.
“We do get our fair share of bruises and this is certainly a full-contact sport,” she said.
“The sport is heavily regulated and each of our members has to take a skill test, but it is also a great way to get in shape and make some close bonds with other women in the process.”
