Four people injured in Balzac collision

Nov 15, 2012 01:38 pm | Carolyn McTighe

Members of the Airdrie Integrated Traffic Unit were dispatched to a single-vehicle collision on Highway 2 southbound just north of Calgary, Nov. 7.

According to reports, a Ford Escape left the southbound lanes and collided with a concrete abutment.

Two men, one woman and one youth, who were all occupants in the vehicle, were transported from the scene by ground ambulance to Airdrie where they received medical treatment.

The cause of the crash is yet to be determined, but road conditions are not believed to have played a factor.

Grant application fraud

After a two-year-long investigation, the RCMP Calgary Commercial Crime Section has laid charges against Gerald Eugene Crick, 43, of Edmonton and Daniel Michael Kutarna, 34, of Crossfield.

Crick has been charged with offences that include three counts of fraud over $5000, three counts of uttering forged documents, three counts of accepting a benefit as a public official, three counts of laundering the proceeds of crime and one count of fraud in connection with the duties of a public office.

Kutarna has been charged with fraud over $5,000 and laundering the proceeds of crime.

RCMP were tipped off to the criminal activity in, when members received a complaint from Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada (AANDC), formerly Indian and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC).

AANDC reported that someone had falsified documents during a grant application and that after an internal audit several suspicious aboriginal business development grant applications had been uncovered.

These grants, which were applied for in support of various business projects, exceeded $187,000.

Upon handing the investigation over to members of the RCMP Calgary Commercial Crime Section it was confirmed that these business projects did not exist.
