The Internet Privacy Standards policy will help protect the privacy of visitors to RVS’ website and will conform to standards set out by the government of Alberta.
“We have been waiting for this and I think the public has been waiting for this too,” said Trustee Sylvia Eggerer. “It’s important we keep our students as safe as we possibly can without compromising their education.”
RVS’ website manager will monitor the site to ensure it complies with student and Alberta privacy regulations. Personal information provided will be managed according to the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act.
The rules will apply to third-party suppliers or vendors, such as technology experts, associated with RVS.
According to Superintendent Greg Bass, the new policy will provide written confirmation of the board’s expectations. He added those who don’t adhere to the policy will be subject to legal action by the school board.
“We do have vendors, consultants and various organizations we engage from time to time,” said Bass. “We will now ensure, before you walk in the door, these are standards you have to adhere to.”
Bass added, Alberta Education was one of the motivating factors for the creation of the new policy.
“Alberta Education is really pushing this out to the school boards,” he said.
Trustee Norma Lang said the policy was a good one.
“I think it is important we get this underway as soon as possible,” she said.
