A Chestermere family will be celebrating an important milestone at this year’s Tour de Airdrie. The local marathon, which is being held in April 21, will be the 30th for Craig and Bobbi Skrynyk and they are on a mission to run 50 half-marathons before they both turn 50 years old.

The quest for 50 began in 2005 when the family vowed to begin living a healthier, more active lifestyle. It started with purchasing a treadmill and they ran their first race in Manitoba in 2006, which set sparked the idea to run another 49.

“Before we’d even completed the first one, my wife said ‘I have a great idea, let’s run 50 half marathons before we’re 50,” said Skrynyk. “And I wasn’t one to back down from a challenge.”

The tally now stands at 29 races for Bobbi and 28 for Skrynyk and the races have taken them to Manitoba, Kelowna, Edmonton, several cities in Southern Alberta and as far south as Texas and Florida.

There have been several milestones along the way and perhaps none as memorable as the race the Skrynyks ran in Galveston, Tex. It was the couple’s 20th race and it coincided with a cruise they took with Bobbi’s parents, who winter in Texas. They went on the five-day cruise and were scheduled to make port in Galveston the day before the race.

However, a heavy fog prevented the ship from pulling into shore, so the couple ran the equivalent of the race’s distance on the ship’s track.

“We started exactly at the time the race started and it was so foggy you couldn’t see anything,” Skrynyk said. “We got ship medals and what was really cool was that if you looked around (at the end of the race), you could see hundreds of other ships sitting in the port.

“We never truly ran the race, but it’s the one we’ll remember the most.”

Another highlight for the family was a marathon they ran in Disneyland.

They also have a special plan for when they reach the 50-race pinnacle.

They’re not sure how long it will take them to reach 50, but when they do, the family is planning on heading to Disneyworld with all four running the Goofy Run. It takes place over a weekend and includes a half marathon on the Saturday and a full marathon on the Sunday.
