Hockey team donates tourney proceeds to local family
The Airdrie Atom Rednecks hockey club captured silver in the red division of its home tournament, Feb. 8 to 10.
The Rednecks were defeated 5-0 by the Lethbridge Northstars.
In the divisionís bronze medal game, the Simons Valley Spartans defeated the Bow River Gladiators with a score of 8-3.
The Olds Atom B Grizzlys defeated the Calgary Saints 9-1 in the blue division gold medal and it was an all-Airdrie battle for bronze.
The Airdrie Warriors defeated the Airdrie Ice, 6-1, which was good for third place.
In Tier II, the Blackfoot Chiefs defeated the Coaldale Cobras 5-3 for gold. The Red Deer KFC Chiefs beat the Millwood Bruins 10-3 to win the Tier I gold medal.
The tournament also served as a fundraiser for the Rednecks, as proceeds from the tournament were donated to the family of the teamís late assistant coach, Cory Goertzen, who died in a car accident in January. The tournament raised an estimated $2,000 for the Goertzen family.
In its second-last indoor meet of the season, the Airdrie Aces Athletics Club returned home from the Alberta Indoor Championships, which were held in Edmonton, Feb. 11 and 12, with another slew of medals. Several of the Acesí relay teams medalled at the meet.
The bantam boys captured silver in the 4x100-metre relay and the 4x200-metre relay. They placed third in the 800-metre sprint medley relay. The peewee girls also swept the silver medal spot on the podium, placing second in the 4x100-, 4x200-metre and medley relays.
In the individual events, Scott Chalupiak won silver in the midget boys 60-metre hurdles and bronze in the pentathlon. Jasmine Szucs won silver in the peewee girls shotput and captured the bronze medal in the peewee overall championship.
Ryan Zachary won bronze in the midget boys weight throw and Adam Sleik also won bronze in the midget boys shotput.
