Airdronian loses important identification in theft

Mar 07, 2013 03:13 pm

Dear Editor,

I was recently robbed at Genesis Place in Airdrie. Are we, as patrons of the rec rentre safe to leave contents in a locker? Please read on and decide what you want to take with you when you work out.

Last Thursday between 6:45 and 8:45 p.m. thieves broke into a locker and made off with my wallet., then proceeded to London Drugs and purchased over $2,000 worth of merchandise. They then went to Home Depot and also purchased over $2,000 worth of merchandise. Both purchases were done with a credit card.

Contents of my wallet were of considerable personal value, and contained identification that is very hard to replace. If anything the thieves can have my money, it was only about $40 in cash. They can even purchase things with my credit cards (but they better be quick because they were all cancelled and insured). The identification was even more valuable. I am a veteran. In there was my veteran benefits card that I use to make my medical claims, as well as my Military Identification Card. My Alberta Health Card that I hope I will not need now as well as other health and drug cards, my driver’s license and numerous other cards that I will eventually have to use and will not have at my disposal.

If there is a thread of hope in all this I know that for the most part citizens of this city are decent and hard working. And if a wallet is found lying around I hope they would gather it up and return it or give it to the police so it can be returned. Losing a wallet or having it stolen is very disruptive to a person’s life, and more costly than the money it contains.

All said and done, the damages to local folks and businesses who would otherwise work for a living is severe.

Theft is no joke. I hope the thieves get caught and are forced to do some jail time. I hope that security at Genesis Place is stepped up. I hope that the RCMP catches the thief.

DAN MORVILLO, Airdrie
