11-year-old named Special Olympics Airdrie athlete of the month
Eleven-year-old Amy DeBruyn has been named Special Olympics Airdrie’s athlete of the month and it’s easy to see why. Stepping up to bat, the ball player cracked a hit past second base during a recreational game on July 31.
She had some tips for aspiring ball players.
“You play really hard and you come to all the practices,” she said. “I practice with my dad. I catch the ball and then I throw it underhand.”
DeBruyn plays on the Airdrie Special Olympics softball team, which recently returned from the Alberta Special Olympics Summer Games in Devon, AB with a silver medal in Division B softball.
“That tournament was really a time for a lot of the kids to grow up. They watched other teams and how they played – we picked up a lot from them,” said Head Coach Rob Moser. “A lot of these kids grew years in that short weekend.”
Moser has been coaching the squad for five years and said the team did not anticipate taking home medals during the games.
“It’s all for fun, we never really thought about anything. The kids are always dreaming, but really they just wanted to be there,” he said. “To get the silver was something they didn’t anticipate. But it was the hard work they put in. It was their crown and glory.”
Softball is just one of the sports that Special Olympics Airdrie offers. Athletes can also take part in bowling, hockey, soccer and swimming.
Media Relations Coordinator for Special Olympics Airdrie Sue Farkas-Fillatre said getting involved in sports helped members grow in confidence.
“Some of them have come out of their shells so much. It’s great,” she said. “The athletes are amazing. They’re so inspirational. They always cheer each other on, they motivate each other.”
DeBruyn said she will continue to work hard and practice with her dad in order to become a better softball player. She had words of advice to other kids about getting involved with the club.
“I’ll tell them to work hard,” she said. “Work so hard. It’s fun.”
