Canals Landing show homes to feature work from local artists
ARTember’s title sponsor Genesis Land Development Corporation (GLDC), is offering a unique opportunity for local artists as they unveil their newest show homes in Canals Landing in September.
GLDC General Manager of Sales and Marketing Kristine Wilkinson said anybody who has toured show homes knows that home builders spend a good amount of effort finding art for the homes and thought the idea of a local art contest would be a great way to fill the empty walls.
“We thought it was far more impactful and authentic to have local artist work,” she said.
With that, the Canals Landing art contest was born.
From now until Monday, Aug. 26, local artists of all levels can enter submissions for the contest.
Nine winning art pieces will be displayed in the three show homes from Sept. 21 through to Oct. 22. The opportunity also allows artists to submit an asking price for the art, which will hopefully be purchased when someone touring the show homes falls in love with the piece.
Wilkinson said the contest is not only open to professional artists but to anyone with a creative desire, including children.
Designs cannot contain advertisements or promotional content and must be able to be hung on a wall.
“ARTember is very happy to see Canals (and GLDC) take a more active role,” said Sherry Shaw-Froggatt from Creative Airdrie of the contest, which coincides with this year’s ARTember running from Sept. 13 to Sept. 29.
Wilkinson said she was made aware of a lack of gallery spaces within Airdrie for artists to showcase their work and added she hopes, “people fall in love with the idea and something we continue to do as we roll out more show homes.”
“They have show homes with blank walls, which act as the perfect gallery space,” Shaw-Froggatt said.
The winning pieces will be selected by a yet to be determined selection committee made up of representatives from the City of Airdrie, GLDC and local community members.
“I think it’s cool and a little more interesting (than most art in show homes),” Wilkinson said.
