Airdrie trustee to run for re-election
Rocky View Schools (RVS) Trustee Sylvia Eggerer has decided to run for her third term as part of RVS board of trustees.
“I spent a lot of time thinking about it,” she said of the decision to run again. “I went through the list of things I wanted to do last election and a lot of those things are still on the list. Not that we haven’t worked on them but there is still work to be done.”
Eggerer was first elected to the board in a 2006 by-election where she served for a year before running and winning again in the 2007 election. After sitting on the board for a full term, she opted to run in the election for a third time in 2010 and won by acclimation.
The former board chair and longtime RVS employee said she will continue to focus on infrastructure as a top priority but adds she knows there is also work to be done rolling out the new Student Learning Consultation Plan assessment, which will begin being implemented in 13 RV schools.
She said with the Provincial government’s education budget cutbacks, class sizes everywhere are going up and with that comes greater difficulties for teachers, which is something she wishes to minimize.
Eggerer said she will also focus on acquiring more representation on the board for Airdrie’s growing population. Currently, two trustees represent Airdrie on the board of trustees, Eggerer and Trustee Don Thomas.
“When it comes to the number of people actually living in Airdrie and the representation we have (on the board) makes it frustrating,” she said, adding the growing Airdrie population makes it necessary for more Airdrie voices on the board.
She said she and Thomas have brought a motion to add another trustee to Airdrie’s coverage area to the board twice in the past, but other trustees voted against the change.
“We need to bring it forward again,” she said,
She adds with Thomas announcing that he will not run again, she can help the new Airdrie trustee with the learning curve if she is re-elected.
“I love RVS and I really am pleased with most of the direction we’ve gone but there are a few things (to work on),” Eggerer said. “The best part is the growth and that we’ve been able to manage both urban and rural (areas). The education RVS is providing is second to none.”
The last day for trustee hopefuls to enter the race is Sept. 15, and the election will be held on Oct. 21. RVS will hold an information session for all candidates on Sept. 25 from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the education centre.
