George McDougall Mustangs rush into girls soccer season
With just a week between the opening of a new school year and the start of the 2013 Rocky View Sports Association (RVSA) girls’ soccer season, the George McDougall Mustangs have been in a hurry to prepare for the 2013 campaign.
“It’s been a bit rushed,” said Iain Cain, who co-coaches the team with Brooke Grosh.
“We only saw the girls for the first time last week and we set our team after our third practice together on Sept. 9.”
“However, we had a lot of good players come out for the team this year, and we are very happy with what we have seen so far,” he added.
A total of 18 players make up this year’s Mustangs squad, which opened its season on Sept. 10 at Monklands Soccer Park in Airdrie with an 8-1 loss against the Springbank Phoenix.
“We did lose a decent amount of Grade 12 players from last year’s team, but we do have a solid group of players coming in here,” Cain said. “We have a nice mix of Grade 9s who have joined the team along with those who are returning from Grade 10 and 11, so we should have a nice squad this year.”
Last season, the Mustangs made it all the way to the RVSA championship game, where the team lost to the Cochrane Cobras by a score of 4-1.
Even though that defeat was a tough one for the team, Cain is hoping the Mustangs can build off of the momentum in the early portion of the season.
“A couple of wins to start off the year would be nice, especially since we have a short amount of time to work with the girls,” he said. “We have had a good program here over the years and we always hope that we can come away with the win.”
The Mustangs return to action on Sept. 12 as the team will travel to Cochrane for a date with the Bow Valley Bobcats at 4:45 p.m.
The squad will be on the road again on Sept. 17, when it will visit the Chestermere Cowboys.
The Bert Church Chargers opened its season on the road on Sept. 10, as it took on the defending league champion Cochrane Cobras.
Full details on that game were not available as of press time.
The Chargers will welcome the Cowboys to its home field in Airdrie on Sept. 12 at 4:45 p.m., and will play host to the Phoenix on Sept. 17 in a 4:45 p.m. contest.t.
