ARTember ramps up to promote arts and culture
The arts and culture community in Airdrie is in full swing with ARTemeber events happening around town and there are two more creative events for the artfully inclined to take part in.
Movies that Matter
Presented by the Airdrie Public Library, the City of Airdrie, Airdrie Regional Arts Society and Creative Airdrie, Movies that Matter are the screening of two arts-based documentaries.
The first screening occurred on Sept. 17, at City Hall and featured a documentary called Dare to Dream about a group of Alberta students who created a feature length movie.
“Almost 40 people were there, which was great,” said Veronica Funk from the Public Library.
She said the group of viewers included a Grade 9 class from George McDougall High School.
The screening was followed by a short discussion and question-and-answer period with local movie producer Rob Ing.
“A huge thank you to Rob for taking the time. There was a lot of good feedback between him and the kids,” she said.
The second movie to be screened is called Smitten, which will be shown at City Hall on Sept. 24, at noon.
The documentary is about a man who was introduced to art by his wife and became so enamoured with it he sold everything he owned to start an art collection and open a public gallery space in California that is free of charge for artists.
“It’s really inspiring,” Funk said.
Airdrie Pharmasave and Creative Airdrie are looking for artists to complete a huge mural project on the north side of the Pharmasave building located on Centre Ave and Second Street.
“The Miller Mural has proved so popular and we were looking around the city for more “blank canvases” and the Pharmasave location is perfect,” said Creative Airdrie Communications Chair Sherry Shaw-Froggatt.
The Miller Mural was another Creative Airdrie project that transformed an old storage shed into a colourful work of art along First Ave.
The Pharmasave mural will be an original work of art spanning 60 linear feet.
Artists are asked to submit a proposal and design concept to email@example.com by Oct. 15.
The final proposal will be selected by Airdrie Pharmasave and Creative Airdrie on Oct. 30.
