Birds in backyards cause problem for neighbours
Re: “Resident says chicken concerns are not egg-xactly correct,” LTE Sept. 12
I would like to respond to Heather Bourque’s letter re: chickens. I have lived next to chickens here in Airdrie for the past couple of years and there is nothing pleasant about it.
First of all, chickens smell! It doesn’t matter how often you clean up after them, that smell is in the soil, trust me. There were days I couldn’t stand being in my own backyard.
Secondly, the seed you feed them doesn’t only appeal to them, mice and voles love it. I have the vole tunnels in my backyard to prove it. We have so many mice, our traps are catching an average of three a day. Every bird on the west side knows that the feed is there in my backyard, that’s a real treat to step out on my deck and it is absolutely covered in bird droppings, not to mention my patio furniture is covered in it.
I have to laugh at the next point, Chickens aren’t noisy. I don’t even know what to say to this one. Come stay in my room and at 5 a.m. and let me know if you can hear them. They are noisy.
As for disease, are you a vet? Would you even know what to look for? I’m thinking you’re not and you wouldn’t. But thanks for sharing your diseases when the wind is blowing and your dried chicken poop and feathers are blowing around in my backyard.
This is a bad idea, for the one responsible person we will end up with tons of very irresponsible people. I would have to fight your petition all the way. I don’t think it’s right that what you do in your yard affects what I can do in mine.
