George Mac gets revenge on Springbank Phoenix
Since it lost to the Springbank Phoenix in last year’s Rocky View Sports Association (RVSA) championship game, the George McDougall Mustangs have been waiting to face the team to the west again.
The months of buildup for the Mustangs players was worth it on Sept. 13 at East Lake Athletic Park, as it started off its 2013 season with a 20-9 win over the defending league champions.
“I think I can speak for the rest of the team and say that we are all really happy to get a win against these guys,” Grade 11 quarterback Wes White said.
“Last year’s loss was a tough one for all of us, so we wanted to get a little bit of revenge and we were all pretty pleased about getting the win.”
It was an all-around team effort that allowed the Mustangs to pick up the victory, as it opened up a 20-0 lead over the Phoenix by the time the whistle went for halftime.
“Everyone was working extremely hard today,” Mustangs Head Coach Nolan Rohl said.
“Our defence took over right off of the bat and didn’t let Springbank move the ball down field or produce anything.”
“On offence, we threw the ball up in the air early and that allowed us to get things going on the ground and our special teams play was also very solid,” he added.
After causing chaos in the backfield throughout the first two quarters, the Mustangs defence continued to apply pressure during the second half, as the team came up with some key interceptions late in the game.
“We like to send a ton of pressure out there, and that is something we have worked on since we got out on the field for practice,” Grade 11 linebacker Quinn Yakichuk said.
“That allows us to have a chance to come up with those picks and other big plays.”
“We were really pumped on defence right from the start, and we just stayed intense the whole time,” he added.
The Mustangs will look to continue its winning ways in Cochrane on Sept. 20 at 4:30 p.m., when it will take on the Bow Valley Bobcats at Bow Valley High School.
The Bert Church Chargers, will be looking for its first win of the season on Sept. 21, when it will host the Cochrane Cobras in a 12 p.m. clash at East Lake Athletic Park.
In its season opening contest on Sept. 13, the Chargers were edged out 13-12 by the host Chestermere Cowboys.
