Mayor gives a fond farewell to public servants
I am very sad to report that both Alderman Murray Buchanan and Alderman Glenda have announced that they will not be running in the next municipal election.
Murray has been on council a remarkable seven terms, or 21 years. In my life I have been fortunate to know many community leaders, and Murray is one of the very best. His passion for Airdrie, in my mind, is unmatched. He cares more about our community than people can possibly imagine.
His reputation as an alderman has always been as a fiscally conservative, honest, straight forward/direct, dedicated, consistent and was always prepared, with the mindset of serving the greater good. The last three years have been some of the best times of my working career and I have Murray to thank for that.
I am fortunate to have had him as a mentor. However, more importantly, as a friend. Running for Mayor and being Mayor is challenging at times and Murray was always there for me without exception regardless of the circumstance.
Glenda has been on council a total of nine years or three terms. I remember in the fall of 2004, I happened to be standing next to Glenda the night she was elected. I remember being so very proud of her, getting a big hug and knowing she was very appreciative of all the people who supported her getting elected.
Her time on council represented the most significant growth in Airdrie’s history. Glenda chaired many boards during her time. I believe her passions were library, police committee, and Community Services Advisory Board. The one common denominator with Glenda was always showcasing our community first. That was so evident in her volunteering with the Lioness Club, Supplies for Success and the Christmas Hamper programs.
I will very much miss her humour and energy level at Council meetings. Glenda is always upbeat, with a positive attitude I admire greatly.
I hope when you bump into Murray or Glenda you take a moment to shake their hands and say thanks. They have done Airdrie proud.
Wishing Murray & Glenda and their families all the very best.
Mayor, City of Airdrie
