World Curling Tour event to be held at Airdrie club
The Airdrie Curling Club will be the place to see some elite curling action from Oct. 25 to 27.
The club will be host to the first annual McKee Homes Fall Curling Classic, which will also be an official event on the World Curling Tour.
“We are quite excited about it,” Curling Club President Len Brossart said. “It came together very quickly and we decided to jump on board with an event like this one, as we were looking for some different ideas for the club, and it will also bring a higher level of curling to our rink.”
Brossart said the bonspiel organizers are looking for 16 teams in both the men’s and women’s events, which will feature a total purse of $10,500 per category.
“It’s some of the largest prize money that is out there for a World Curling Tour development bonspiel,” Brossart said. “We are using that development bonspiel distinction to let people know that we may not be up to speed like the other more established events, but we are planning to take that tag off for next year’s event.”
The bonspiel also has a long-term commitment from McKee Homes, as the Airdrie company has come onboard to serve as a major sponsor of the event for the next five years.
“I’m in the sales department for the company that I work for (Convoy Supply) and McKee Homes are one of our customers,” Brossart explained. “We have a good working relationship with them and they give back to the community here in a number of different ways, and we are excited to have them come onboard with us.”
As of press time, the number of teams that have entered the event are lower than what the organizers have hoped for, as just five men’s teams and three women’s rinks have registered.
“We’ve got a little bit of work ahead of us,” Brossart said. “We have a Super League here in Airdrie that we are hoping to draw three or four teams from, along with a couple from our Monday night league, so we should have enough to go ahead with the men’s event.”
“I’m not quite sure on the women’s event as of yet, but we may end up combining the two together this year to get to our 16-team field,” he added. “But we will know by Oct. 18 if we have to do that or not.”
