Girls' soccer teams ready for playoffs
Although players were unsure who they would face in the Rocky View Sports Association girls’ soccer playoffs as of press time, the Bert Church Chargers and the George McDougall Mustangs are ready to enter postseason play.
“I’m excited about it, and I’m sure our team is looking forward to it as well,” Grade 10 student and Mustang defender Kendra Larson said. “We just have to make sure that we take it one game at a time.”
“It’s always different when you play a team the second time around in the playoffs after you played them in the regular season,” Chargers defensive midfielder and goaltender Rebecca DePasquale added. “We just have to forget about what happened in the past, as it’s a whole new game.”
After a 1-0 victory for George McDougall over Bert Church at Monklands Soccer Park on Sept. 24, the Mustangs finished its regular season with a 2-2 record, while the Chargers wrapped up its campaign with a 1-4 mark.
After starting the year with an 8-1 setback against the Springbank Phoenix on Sept. 10, the Mustangs made some tactical changes for the remainder of the campaign, which has helped with its improvement.
“We now have three defenders, five midfielders, and two strikers, and it’s made a huge difference,” Larson said. “We used that formation for the first time against Bow Valley on Sept. 12, and to beat them was a great feeling.”
As for the Chargers, this season marked the first time since 2010 the team picked up a victory, as it took a 5-1 win over the Chestermere Lakers on Sept. 12.
“As a group, we have played better than we have in the past,” Chargers Head Coach Brandon Nordoft said. “As the season has gone on, we have gotten better at certain things, and we have been playing well during all of our games.”
“As a team, we are working a lot better together than we have in the past, and our chemistry has become a lot stronger,” DePasquale, who is in Grade 12, added.
The RVSA playoffs get underway with a pair of quarterfinals on Sept. 26, with the semi-finals set for Oct. 1.
The divisional championship game will take place on Oct. 3.
The locations and times of those games was not determined as of press time.
