Organizers getting set for another Pumpkin Fest
Mark your calendar because the 10th annual Pumpkin Festival is coming back to Blue Grass Nursery in Balzac on Oct. 12.
The free family favourite event will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
“It’s such a great event and is very successful,” said Lisa Silva, marketing manager for the nursery, of why the event’s format will remain the same as previous years.
The day is jammed packed with fun events and activities for kids of all ages.
Events include a showcase of unusual gourds and pumpkins, a giant straw maze, a petting zoo, face painting, hay rides, pumpkin carving and much more.
Another highlight is the Cinderella pumpkin coach that is built from wood but looks like a giant pumpkin that children and adults can take a ride in and feel like a princess.
There is also a showcase of some gigantic pumpkins donated from a farm east of Airdrie.
“You get to see some pumpkins way bigger than some of the kids,” Silva said.
Festival-goers will also get a chance to meet Balzac Billy, the hamlet’s mascot and get some yummy eats at the concession.
“My favourite (part) is the grand finale, which is a giant pumpkin smash,” Silva said.
During the finale, a huge pumpkin is lifted 80-feet in the air and dropped on a car, smashing both the car and the pumpkin by a crane.
“I love it every year,” she said of the event.
She said she is also looking forward to seeing the smiles on children’s faces.
“We love hosting this free family event in support of the hospital,” she said. “It’s nice for us (the store staff) too because it’s just fun to see so many people happy.”
Suggested admission is a donation to the Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation.
“Anything is always appreciated,” Silva said of donations.
