Aldermen should run on individual strengths
I do not usually write to the media but I feel it is important for people to think about the “slate” and what was put forward to the voters in our city. I believe slates have no place in our local politics and this applies to the entire spectrum from left to right.
They are often created to help fuel the politics and agendas of others over and above what is needed or wanted at the local level, which is to address the concerns of local citizens without regard to the political ideology or needs of “others.” Slates are created to highjack the democratic process to push ideologies and wants without honestly caring about local needs. Of course they will always dress up their positions as being concerned about local issues.
If we look at what they say are local issues, it would seem these issues are more for the purpose of pushing the position of others to somehow enhance their political image. This can and will likely lead to a “slate” making policies and issuing statements geared to fuelling the ambitions of other persons or organizations. In other words, they are there to serve the interests of others and their agenda not deal with local issues in a practical non-ideological way.
Airdrie 1st: Airdrie citizens understand policies and programs created and run by local government should always be about Airdrie and not about someone else’s political ideology or ambition. It’s ridiculous to use as a platform plank to imply they alone will put Airdrie first (talk about arrogance) which is completely asinine. Are they trying to say previous councils and mayors were putting Airdrie citizens second or third?
24-Hour Healthcare: Here we have what all of us including previous councils and mayors as well as many individual citizens have been pushing and working towards for some time. But they alone will make things happen, which is nice if it was in fact true.
Where will their true loyalties lie when motions needing council decisions are put forth? Do they text or tweet for advice to find out what their position is supposed to be and how they should vote?
We need individuals who make the best decision for our city after they have reviewed facts and listened to any concerns brought forward and not base those decisions on particular ideology or other agendas. If they truly believe Airdrie 1st, then dissolve the slate and run on their individual strengths. All council members should be able to stand on their own without being propped up by others and not be beholden to the policies/ideology of others. Show the voters who you are and what you can bring to the table for the benefit of all citizens.
The only people any council member or mayor should serve are all the citizens of Airdrie, which by the way, means you need to be able to park your personal ideologies and feelings at the door.
