The Davis Automotive Group has been named a top 50 employer in Canada by its employees, according to results published in Maclean’s magazine.

The Lethbridge-based company operates 12 locations across Alberta, including Davis Chevrolet in Airdrie.

Airdrie’s Davis location opened on July 3, 2013 and provides jobs to 55 employees, 90 per cent of which completed the survey that contributed to ranking Davis as the No. 22 employer in the 2014 Best Employers in Canada study conducted by Aon Hewitt.

What makes this survey and ranking system unique, according to Airdrie Davis Chevrolet General Manager Glenn Smaha, is that it is an optional survey that is completed by the employees of the company.

“The survey is based on employee views, not the opinions of outside experts,” said Smaha. “It provides a picture of the overall effectiveness of our organization and our staff’s commitment to making this company successful.”

Last year, the Davis Automotive Group was ranked the No. 43 employer in the top small and medium businesses, when the company had less than 400 employees. Due to growth in the company over the last year, they are now ranked among larger companies.

Feedback from the survey is extensive, according to Smaha, who explains that there are three levels of surveys: employee opinion, leadership (management), and human resources. Data is analyzed by Queen’s University and results are then turned over to companies to see where their successes lie and where improvements can be made.

Through an analysis of this year’s survey, Davis will be rolling out a new benefits plan for their employees, as well as introducing a company RRSP in the new year.

Smaha says that because results are employee-driven, this ranking is essential for the future of the company.

“This allows us to benchmark ourselves against other companies in the top 50 and see what it is we need to do to stay there,” said Smaha. “Two of the most important factors from this ranking is that we can make existing staff aware, and it aids in future recruitment, because this is our people telling us that this is a great place to work and to have a career.”

The Davis Automotive Group will celebrate its 25th anniversary in 2014, and while Airdrie’s location is still in its infant stages, Smaha says that satisfaction levels among employees bodes well for the future.

“We have engaged employees who have a desire to be here,” he said. “This advocates for ourselves and shows that we have employees who are dedicated to doing the best job possible.”
