Gordon Perry, a local children’s author, has found a successful niche with the news he has been awarded his second National Association of Book Entrepreneurs (NABE) Pinnacle Book Achievement Award for Best Book in the Children’s Interest category, which he received this week.
“It’s pretty special,” Perry said. “It’s something you don’t even know will happen.”
Perry won his first NABE Pinnacle Book award in April for his first release, The Frog and the Prince. This newest recognition for his latest book, The Funny Farm, means back-to-back wins for the author.
The longtime Airdrie resident said he wrote both stories, along with several others he intends to release in the future, for his kids years ago and never expected to share them with the world.
“I wrote these stories to entertain my own kids,” he said. “Now to see how much joy I’m bringing into the world for these other children, kind of brings tears to my eyes.”
Perry, who has long enjoyed poetry, would write the rhyming tales for his children as a way to be with them while he was on the road for work, and didn’t think they would one day be published and award winning.
He said the awards really mean something special to him and help him see that his books are bringing joy to children.
However, he is quick to share the credit with his illustrators: Lauren Fast for The Frog and the Prince and Janice Blaine for The Funny Farm.
“The ability to translate the story into pictures to tell the story is another level of art,” he said. “Before they were just words on paper and now they are beautiful books.”
Perry, who sells many of his books at weekend markets, said he has witnessed the power of the illustrations first hand as young kids who cannot yet read visit his booth and can tell what the story is about through the pictures alone.
“Having seen how these ladies transform my stories into picture form and make them come to life is really beautiful,” he said.
Perry is currently working once again with Blaine for his third book to be release in spring 2014. The new book The Dog and The Hen: It’s Fun to Be Friends will focus on overcoming bullying.
His third book will also be a rhyming tale with a moral imbedded in it, not unlike The Funny Farm, which warns children of the negative results of acting like an animal and misbehaving.
Being a children’s book author is the fourth career choice for Perry, who retired three years ago from being a longtime renovation contractor and has also had experience in marketing and sales, and he said he is really enjoying it.
“I’m loving it. I’m having a lot of fun,” he said.
NABE is a book marketing organization for self- published authors and the Pinnacle Achievement Awards are selected by a panel of editors.
The awards take into consideration content, book format, writing style as well as font and book cover design, according to a NABE press release.
Both Perry’s books are available at www.booksbygordon.com and you can download a free colouring book of the illustrations at the same site.
