New school a huge win

The Airdrie City View was thrilled to be present at the announcement of a new kindergarten to Grade 4 school in Cooper’s Crossing in Airdrie on Dec. 18. Although we are concerned about the fact no firm completion date has been set, this community could not have received a better Christmas present than 600 desperately needed new spaces for young children to learn and grow.

Some say this announcement should have been made in May 2011 when three other schools were announced for Airdrie because the need was prevalent even then. That would mean construction would already be underway. An estimated three years is a long time to wait for a new school when children are packed tightly into classrooms.

However, we say better late than never and we commend Rocky View Schools board of trustees past and present who have worked tirelessly to ensure the need for school space in Airdrie was front-and-centre on the Province’s to-do list.

Although there was no petition that spurred this announcement, we also congratulate the Council of School Councils, which was instrumental in convincing the Province to announce the three schools that are now under construction and are scheduled to open in 2014. Merry Christmas, Airdrie this is the best present we could have asked for.
