It is that time of year when people start looking back over the past 365 days to see what they have accomplished and what they regret.

This year has included a number of ups and downs for Airdrie residents. As you can see from our Newsmakers sections (see pages 3, 5, 11 and 16), we have been lucky enough to have had more ups than downs.

Our 2013 Newsmaker of the Year, Airdrie Food Bank Executive Director is the perfect example of how Airdrie gives back to those in need again and again throughout the year. Her hard work and dedication have seen the food bank serve more people than ever in 2013 and have made a new, much-needed, bigger facility become a reality. Thank you for all you do for our community Lori. It has been a pleasure writing countless stories about you, the volunteers who work with you and the wonderful organization you lead.

The flooding of southern Alberta in June (see page 3) is just one example of a tragic event that occurred over this year. Although Airdrie was not hit hard by the flood, the community came together to help those who were by sending food clothing, to those in need; housing complete strangers who needed someone to regroup and volunteering to clean up after the waters had receded.

The October municipal election put Airdrie in the limelight with the formation of a unique political slate (see page 3) and ended in the addition of two new aldermen in council chambers (see related story on page 12).

We would say 2013 was a great success for the city and we canít wait to see what 2014 will bring.
