Re: “Rescue shelter urges residents to keep animals indoors,” Jan. 16

Dear Editor,

What is it about pet ownership that is so difficult to fathom? An Airdrie family finds a cat frozen to the ground? How does this happen? And yet there is no cat bylaw in this city.

Darryl Poburan (manager of municipal enforcement for the City of Airdrie) says, “Pet owners are responsible for the health and welfare of the cat and ensuring the cat stays on the owner’s property,” but we all know that isn’t happening.

He then goes on to suggest that if you’re having problems with cats, you should trap them and take them to the SPCA.

Since when is someone else’s cat my responsibility? The lack of a cat bylaw sends the wrong message, it simply relieves certain cat owners of all responsibility.

Don’t put pet owner’s responsibilities onto the rest of us.

Sy Wilson,
