ATCO Gas donated $50,000 to the 2014 Alberta Summer Games in Airdrie, March 4.

The donation was presented at a volunteer appreciation breakfast at the Toad ‘n Turtle Pubhouse and Grill and the funds will go toward sponsoring the ATCO Gas Torch Relay and the Opening Ceremonies at the Games, taking place from July 24 to 27.

“ATCO Gas is pleased to be part of a program that allows youth to showcase their athletic talents and potential,” said Bill Stephens, president of ATCO Gas. “Our company has supported amateur sport, athletes and the Alberta Games for 26 years. We’re delighted to continue this tradition by sponsoring the 2014 Summer Games in Airdrie.”

“ATCO Gas’s generous support of the Alberta Games provides a significant boost for local organizers and enables us to execute a first-class, multi-sport competition for our young athletes,” said Al Jones, chair of the 2014 Alberta Summer Games.

“Hosting the Games will enable Airdrie to once again demonstrate the pride and enthusiasm the community has for making this an exciting event for athletes, volunteers and spectators.”

The 2014 Summer Games is expected to attract about 3,200 athletes, coaches and officials to the community.

ATCO Gas has sponsored the Alberta Games since 1988. A highlight of its involvement is the ATCO Gas Torch Relay and the lighting of the ATCO Gas Cauldron to open the Games. ATCO Gas’s sponsorship includes funding support, technical expertise, and the provision of handheld torches and a custom built and engineered gas cauldron. Through the years, the natural gas cauldron has been the centerpiece for opening ceremonies at hundreds of amateur sporting events, including the Alberta Games, Western Canada Games and Arctic Winter Games.

“We are very happy to secure our relationship with ATCO Gas and their support of the community, and the Games” said Jones. “Support such as this is important to the success of the games and volunteer efforts.”

Some high-profile sponsorship packages are still available. If you would like more information about the sponsorship opportunities or volunteering for these world-class Games, call the Games Office at 403-945-0104 or go to www.2014airdriegames.ca
