I recently completed a six week class of yoga at Genesis Place Recreation Centre. After all was said and done I wondered why more people donít take these classes.

I was new to yoga and took this class because a friend mentioned it may help with my ailing hips and legs.

So I called up Genesis Place and spoke to one of their very helpful employees who put me in contact with the instructor, who explained what the class was about and how it may help me. So I thought sure for one day a week for six weeks, Iíll give it a try.

My class was close to 16 people each night and there was only me and one other guy taking the class. Why donít more men take these classes?

They are great for stretching out the body and working out the aches and pains. And donít ever say you are too tough or manly for yoga. Some of those routines really get you working hard.

I showed up to the class and there are others stretching out before class. Makes me wonder why you go to a stretching class and stretch before hand? But what do I know these fellow students are pros.

They know the lingo and they have their own mats for working out on and then thereís me - just sitting there waiting for the teacher to tell me what to do.

So you start your class by getting a bunch of accessories to help you with some of the poses and then the class starts off by just laying still on the floor.

Wait what? Just lay there and be still and think about your breathing.

What other work out class can you go to and lay there for the first and last 10 minutes just concentrating on your breathing and letting your body relax? It feels great.

The first few weeks didnít really feel like they were doing much but it was the kind of class I went to. Nice and slow movements while concentrating on the joints and muscles.

These classes did me a lot of good that wasnít noticeable until a few weeks into it while I was doing other sports.

I started running again on the treadmill and felt no pain in my legs or hips. I also curl twice a week and noticed how much better my sliding was and how much lower I could get down behind the rock helping me make more shots. It must be the yoga.

I learned a lot about proper stretching techniques and how you can give your body a great workout with very little impact on the joints.

I would recommend taking any sort of yoga class to anybody as it is a great addition to any workout regime. I want to thank the staff at Genesis and my instructor for introducing me to the world of yoga. I will continue with another class some time in the future when time permits but for now Iíll keep practicing the moves I learned at home.
