The 2014 Alberta Summer Games are just four months away and there is still plenty of space for volunteers.

Games Chair Al Jones and Director of Finance Val Simpson appeared before Airdrie City council on March 17 to provide a progress update, outlining that they are currently at about 20 per cent of their projected 3,000 volunteers that will be required to ensure the Games run smoothly.

“There’s a lot of planning required when you’re expecting to host 3,400 athletes, coaches and technical officials,” said Jones.

“Much work has been done and with only four months left in the planning stages, much more work needs to be done.”

Jones explained that many local businesses are looking at volunteering as a group as a team-building opportunity and that the Games staff is welcoming their talents and time.

“We can accept and are encouraging families to sign up together to volunteer,” said Jones. “We have positions available for all ages and skill sets no matter how limited or advanced. We are confident that by the time the Games are here, we will have the army of volunteers needed to host a successful Games.”

Simpson is projecting a $50,000 surplus thanks to the generosity of the community through gifts in kind.

Despite a slow start with regards to finances, the ball has started rolling again, according to Jones.

“Due to the flooding throughout southern Alberta last year, sponsorships were hard to come by as many business owners, (and) rightfully so, spent their community budgets on helping out fellow Albertans in need,” he said. “Since the new calendar year, I’m pleased to say that local business owners and corporations have now looked towards sponsoring Alberta’s youth in sport.”

The Games budget is set at close to $1.6 million and Jones says they are about $300,000 away from hitting that target.

Jones says no donation or sponsorship is too small and that the Games committee will welcome any contribution.
