Volunteer Airdrie is celebrating local volunteers with their free family friendly Cheers for Volunteers event on April 13 as a wind up to National Volunteer Week.
The event, which is open to all area volunteers from the neighbour that shovels someone else’s walkway to the volunteer who puts in full-time hours at an organization, will include speakers, entertainment, complimentary refreshments and prizes.
“It’s meant to be a celebration, a thank you and a bit of a party to wind up volunteer week,” said Volunteer Airdrie Chair Dave Maffitt.
National Volunteer Week runs from April 6 to 12.
Maffit said the speakers, who are area delegates including Airdrie MLA Rob Anderson, will be speaking on volunteering in general but with a focus on youth volunteerism.
“(Youth volunteering) is definitely very worth while in developing teamwork skills and leadership skills,” Maffit said.
The April 13 event, which will take place at the Rocky View Schools Education Centre, will include family friendly fun such as face painting, magicians and a DJ.
“It’s going to be such a great time,” Maffitt said. “There’s going to be lots of neat activities for kids to do, so it’s very family friendly.”
The Volunteer Airdrie chair said many of the volunteers in the community are not recognized for their efforts because they don’t consider what they are doing as volunteering. He said volunteering doesn’t have to be a regularly scheduled activity, but can be as simple as helping a neighbour with their lawn, periodically giving time to help clean up the city or run an event, or volunteering as a family or corporate group.
“We want to raise the profile of volunteering in Airdrie,” he said.
Maffitt volunteers his time with youth sporting organizations and said he was inspired to volunteer because he felt he had something to give back to a community that had given him so much.
“The key is to try and find something of interest to you and kind of view (volunteering) as a part of a hobby,” he said.
