One year ago on April 1, Airdrie Upcycle opened its doors with the belief of “Airdrie for Airdrie,” which works upon keeping donations and community connections in the community as a vital part of helping the business and local charities succeed.
“I was donating more than my donation lady could handle and it was all perfectly good stuff,” said Rebecca Reaville, an Airdrie Upcycle representative. “I would rather keep (the donations) specifically community oriented. We are getting rid of so much good stuff.”
The thrift store works under the goal of creating a profit, which they can then turn around and donate to local organizations suggested by the community.
“We are working hard at (turning a profit to donate) but we haven’t quite hit that yet,” Reaville said.
To celebrate the store’s anniversary, staff will be hosting an anniversary event on April 5 at their location at 400 Main Street.
The event will include face painting and henna artists for $5 to $10, with all the money raised from the body art going to the Boys and Girls Club of Airdrie.
The body art will run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the store.
In addition, Airdrie Upcycle will be giving a 10 per cent discount to patrons that bring at least two non-perishable food items for the Airdrie Food Bank.
“It’s great to support your community and shopping-wise you get the best bang for your buck at Airdrie Upcycle,” Reaville said.
The thrift store boasts an every day bag sale for clothing, which allows shoppers to stuff a bag full of clothes for only $10.
“It’s amazing how much you can fit in there,” Reaville said of the stuff a bag sale.
The location is also one of the few places in the city you can find larger donated furniture items.
“It has been a great year getting ourselves established in the Airdrie community and we look forward to being involved in the Airdrie community for years to come,” Reaville wrote in an email to Airdrie City View.
